Breast Health: Diagnostic & Imaging Services |
Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast offers comprehensive breast imaging and health education services specifically designed to meet the unique needs of women of all ages.
According to the American Cancer Society, the chance of a woman developing breast cancer is about 1 in 8. Thanks to advances in medical technology, breast cancer can be detected at an early, treatable stage. You can take a proactive role in your own health by following the American Cancer Society’s guidelines which recommend an annual mammogram starting at age 40 for average-risk women or 5-10 years sooner for those with a strong family history or genetic predisposition to cancer.
Whether you are receiving a screening mammogram or a diagnostic mammogram to pinpoint a problem, rest assured that you will receive the highest quality of care from our registered mammographers. Sacred Heart utilizes digital mammography systems, which provide numerous advantages, including excellent visibility of the breast, fast generation of images, the ability to magnify and manipulate images to prevent retakes, and less discomfort during compression.
A radiologist will make a timely review, interpretation and report available to your referring physician. Please make sure you bring prior films from other facilities to your exam for the radiologist to compare your current images with previous years’ images. In the event that something is found during the regular mammogram, you may receive additional mammogram images or a breast ultrasound, depending on the findings.
In addition, one of our digital mammography machines is equipped with stereotactic breast biopsy capabilities, which allows the physicians to take a needle core biopsy using a tissue-sampling device guided by either mammography or ultrasound images.
Sacred Heart also offers a magnetic resonance image (MRI) breast coil, which helps enhance the MRI image and has been shown to detect the smallest of breast lesions. An enhanced image allows the radiologist to look inside the breast without having to perform surgery or compress the breast. This procedure can successfully image the dense breast, usually found in younger women and women with breast implants.
