The Family Birth Place

Upcoming Education Classes

The Family Birth Place offers weekly tours of the center on Monday evenings at 6:00p.m. The tours are limited to 12 people and reservations are required. Please call the Welcome Desk at (850) 278-3676 for more information or to make a reservation.

Prepared Childbirth Class: Begins the first Monday & Thursday of each month at 6:30p.m.
Whether couples are expecting their first child or need a refresher course, this four-week educational series will help prepare expecting moms and their support teams to be active participants in the upcoming birth of their baby. Led by Sue Johnson, certified childbirth educator, the cost of the entire course is $30 per couple and will meet every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for four weeks in Family Birth Place education classroom, which is located on the second floor of the new wing. Participants will learn techniques, exercises and comfort measures to use during labor. The class also features a special tour of the Family Birth Place. In addition, one session will focus on essential baby care skills, highlighting bathing, diapering, newborn appearance, circumcision care, car seat information, basic first aid for infants and warning signs for emergency care. Cost: $30

Happiest Baby on the Block: First Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Are you ready to be a parent? Sleepless nights, crying baby, marital stress… Come learn an extraordinary approach to calm your baby in the Happiest Baby Class. New and expecting parents will learn step-by-step ways to help babies sleep longer in addition to finding out how to soothe even the fussiest infant in minutes or less. Key topics include the missing fourth trimester, the calming reflex, the five S’s and the cuddle cure. The five S’s that initiate a calm reflex include swaddling, side/stomach positioning, shushing sounds, swinging and sucking. Cost: $30

Breastfeeding 101: Second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.
Breastfeeding can be one of the most enjoyable and special experiences for a new mother, and the health benefits for both mother and baby are significant. While breastfeeding is natural, it is a learned skill for a new mother and baby. This two-hour class provides helpful information and recommended techniques to make breastfeeding easier for both mom and baby. Filled with antibodies, protein and essential vitamins and minerals, breast milk is custom-designed to meet the specific needs of your baby at each stage of development. Cost: $10

Breastfeeding Support Group: Fourth Thursday at 10:00 a.m. each month
All mothers and babies are welcome to join this support group to talk about the joys and challenges of breastfeeding. For more information about the support group, contact Regina Humphrey, lactation consultant, at (850) 278-3995. Cost: Free

Baby Weigh Day: Second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m.
Baby Weigh Days are a great time to bring your healthy baby to the hospital for a weight check while mingling with other mothers of young infants. Moms can share stories, tips and laughter during this event. This event takes place on the second floor of the Family Birth Place. Cost: Free

Baby Basics: Third Tuesday of each month 6 p.m.
To help prepare future parents for the basic handling of their newborn, Sacred Heart is hosting a monthly Baby Basics class. The class highlights how to clothe, bathe, diaper and swaddle your baby in addition to how to recognize signs of illness, how to use a car seat, and how to feed your baby. Cost: $10

Super Siblings Class: Fourth Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.
This educational and fun, two-hour class helps prepare children for the arrival of their new baby brother or sister. Entertained by music and special games, children will learn how to care and help with their new baby sibling while expressing their feelings in a positive environment. Cost: Free

Baby Blues Discussion Group: Fourth Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m.
It's important for new mothers — and those who love them — to understand the symptoms of postpartum depression and to reach out to family, friends, and medical professionals for help. Led by Gina Gelormini, registered nurse and regional coordinator for Postpartum Support International, this class facilitates open communication and support for new moms who might be experiencing the baby blues and post-partum depression. Cost: Free

Symptoms of postpartum depression include:
  • Feeling sad, depressed or anxious
  • Finding it difficult to enjoy yourself or your baby
  • Having difficulty bonding with your baby
  • Being worried that you might hurt yourself or your baby

    With the proper support, mothers who are experiencing any degree of baby blues or postpartum depression can go on to be healthy, happy parents.     Safe Sitter Program: Call for Class Times Cost: $25
    This quarterly program helps adolescents prepare to be safe babysitters. Participants will receive hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques in addition to learning security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door. Additional topics include basic child development and the business aspects of babysitting.
